: The potential Senate vacancy in California left by Vice President Kamala Harris has two Black Democratic congresswomen, Barbara Lee and Karen Bass, as the leading contenders. While both women bring experience and qualifications to the table, concerns have been raised about their potential replacements, and even speculation on Governor Gavin Newsom’s intentions to avoid fallout from choosing one congresswoman over the other has been voiced.
To offer an alternative view, choosing either Barbara Lee or Karen Bass could jeopardize Democratic control in their respective House districts, a valid concern as the party definitely does not want to take any losses in their already slim majority. Alternatively, these women have the experience and qualifications needed to fill the Senate seat appropriately. Moreover, both of them have represented their communities with unwavering commitment and great leadership.
It is also worth considering appointing a Latino or Asian American to fill the vacancy, which could aid in representation and balance within Congress. However, political considerations can’t be ignored as the state’s Democratic Governor can come under pressure from the Black community to fill the seat with an African American.
Regardless of the decision, the Governor must thoroughly scrutinize the candidates and pick the one who will best serve the interests of California and the nation. While the odds are now in favor of Barbara Lee and Karen Bass, Newsom’s choice shouldn’t be based on mere calculations but on what’s best for his constituents. Ultimately, whosoever is selected to fill Kamala Harris’s Senate seat will have to do a great job, as she has an excellent track record. We can only hope for the best for the chosen one and for California!
