Volodymyr Zelensky Accuses Arab Leaders of Neglecting Russia’s Invasion Ahead of G7 Summit

Hiroshima, Japan – In anticipation of his appearance at the G7 summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced his concerns about certain Arab leaders “turning a blind eye” to Russia’s invasion. Zelensky’s visit to Hiroshima aims to secure additional military support for a planned counter-offensive.

During his attendance at the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia on Friday, Zelensky highlighted that, among the Arab League nations, only Syria openly supports Russia’s invasion. Other member nations have opted to maintain cordial relations with Moscow.

Regrettably, Zelensky pointed out, some individuals around the world and within the summit disregard the atrocities occurring, such as the mistreatment of prisoners of war and illegal annexations. He emphasized the importance of an unbiased perspective and the need to maintain independence, regardless of Russia’s attempts to influence the situation.

In his address, Zelensky drew parallels to the Arab world’s own history of invasion and occupation, asserting that Ukraine, too, is defending itself against colonizers and imperialists.

Saudi Arabia, as the host nation, has delicately navigated the conflict, expressing support for a UN resolution demanding Russia’s troop withdrawal while providing $400 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. However, Saudi Arabia refrains from imposing sanctions on Russia and positions itself as a neutral party in the conflict. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman renewed Saudi Arabia’s offer to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv to bring an end to the hostilities.

Syria, recently readmitted to the Arab League, seized the opportunity to advocate for the region’s self-determination without foreign interference during the summit. Meanwhile, Zelensky criticized Iran, a non-member of the Arab League, for allegedly supplying Shahed drones to Russia, a claim denied by Iran.

Zelensky is scheduled to travel from Saudi Arabia to the G7 summit, where he will hold discussions with US President Joe Biden. Their meeting is expected to take place in the coming days. The summit commenced with a renewed condemnation of Russia and the announcement of additional sanctions.

The G7, comprised of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan, represents the world’s wealthiest democracies. This year, eight other countries, including Australia and India, have been invited to participate.

Zelensky’s visit to Japan marks the furthest distance he has traveled from Kyiv since the war began in February 2022. Although the journey poses potential safety risks, it is deemed essential to secure further assistance in Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, emphasized the significance of Zelensky’s physical presence at such international events. He stressed that when a person is physically present, they have a better understanding of the situation on the ground and can effectively advocate for their country.
