Shock Poll Majority of Americans Believe Sex is Biological, Not a Social Construct

It seems the tides are turning in America, as a recent poll has found that a growing majority of Americans consider sex to be a biological reality rather than a social construct. This is a significant shift from previous societal beliefs that were primarily inclined towards the notion of sexual orientation being something that is socially determined.

On one side of the argument, those in favor of the biological perspective believe that sexual orientation is determined by our DNA. They argue that this is backed by scientifically accepted biological facts. Biological differences do exist between men and women and while a social construct might have some impact on our actions and beliefs, our genetics play a bigger role in determining our sexual orientation.

Alternatively, those who believe that sex is a social construct argue that the perception of men and women as fundamentally different biological entities is an outdated and patriarchal notion. They suggest that cultural and societal constructs have a far greater influence on our perception of gender and sexuality. Therefore, they argue that limiting someone’s identity on the basis of their biological identity is regressive and discriminatory.

Irrespective of which side of the argument you subscribe to, one thing is for sure: there needs to be a respectful and open discussion about how we can continue to move forward as a society in respecting and valuing the diversity and variety of ways in which people are able to identify within their own lives.

At its core, this poll reveals the ongoing tension between scientific and sociological worldviews. While it is true that scientific facts cannot be ignored, we need to keep in mind that the manner in which we apply those facts should always consider the impact on society as a whole. Scientists need to work delicately with sociologists so that their objective search for truth is evenly matched with the need for societal inclusiveness. Ultimately, the discussion around gender and sexual orientation must continue in a manner that is compassionate, open to debate, and accepting of all viewpoints.
