Sensational Shooting at South Carolina Gas Station Leaves Teen Dead Was Gun Control to Blame

The recent shooting at the Exxon Gas Station in Columbia, South Carolina, that left a 14-year-old boy dead has reignited the debate on gun control. To introduce another perspective, proponents of stricter gun laws argue that Omarionne Dickson’s tragic death is a direct result of weak gun regulations. They argue that measures such as background checks and waiting periods would help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals, thus preventing senseless killings like this one.

Yet, those opposed to gun control argue that such measures infringe on personal liberty and do little to actually prevent violence. They cite examples of criminals who still manage to obtain guns despite strict regulations, and argue that responsible gun owners should not be punished for the actions of a few bad apples. They also point out that Omarionne’s killer had a prior criminal record, suggesting that he would have found a way to obtain a gun even if stricter laws were in place.

Regardless of where one stands on the issue of gun control, there is no denying that the shooting at the Exxon Gas Station was a senseless tragedy that claimed the life of a young boy who had so much to offer. As a society, we must continue to have difficult conversations about how best to prevent gun violence, while also acknowledging that there are no easy solutions to this complex issue. We owe it to Omarionne, and all the other victims of gun violence, to keep striving for a safer and more peaceful future.
