President Joe Biden informed G7 leaders on Friday of the United States’ commitment to join an international effort aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force. As part of this initiative, US personnel, along with allies and partners in Europe, will participate in training Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation aircraft, including F-16s.
The training program, expected to commence in the coming weeks, will primarily take place in Europe rather than the United States. The decision to support this training initiative represents a significant shift for President Biden, who previously expressed reservations regarding the necessity of providing F-16s to Ukraine. However, following discussions with G7 leaders in Hiroshima, Japan, where the topic of enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities featured prominently, President Biden made the decision to back the training program.
The swift development of this decision highlights the urgency and importance attached to bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s recurrent aerial attacks. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been particularly instrumental in rallying countries possessing F-16s to contribute these aircraft to Ukraine’s defense efforts.
An administration official emphasized that the United States and its allies have already been actively supporting Ukraine by providing systems, weapons, and training for offensive operations this spring and summer. The commitment to enhance the Ukrainian Air Force is a testament to the long-term dedication to Ukraine’s self-defense.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, en route to the G7 meeting, welcomed the historic decision by the United States and President Biden to support the international fighter jet coalition.
During the forthcoming months of training, the coalition of participating countries will determine the specifics of providing fighter jets, including the quantity and the nations involved.
