Jaw-dropping Plot to Kidnap Michigan Governor Alleged Conspirator Pleads Guilty

It is unsettling to hear of a group that had allegedly planned to kidnap a sitting governor of a state. The fact that they had even conducted surveillance on Governor Whitmer’s vacation home and had even practiced a “snatch and grab” operation is disturbing. Ty Garbin’s admission of guilt confirms the seriousness of the conspiracy and the danger that Governor Whitmer faced.

[For] Those who support the law clearly see the gravity of the situation. No individual or group has the right to kidnap a legal representative of the state. These individuals had planned to forcibly remove Governor Whitmer from her responsibilities without any legal basis. To support the group’s cause without any legal or constitutional backing is not only dangerous but also criminal in nature.

[Against] In contradistinction, some may view this as an action against the governor’s alleged tyranny. They argue that Governor Whitmer’s decision was unconstitutional and unreasonable, and this was a step taken by concerned citizens. Those who believe that the governor’s actions were illegal claim that the governor’s powers are limited under the state emergency act. They claim that she overstepped those powers and needed to be removed from her office.

Regardless of the view, the rule of law must prevail. The US Constitution and the state constitution provide legal, constitutional and peaceful methods of seeking redress against perceived wrongs by elected officials. No group or individual has the right to remove any official outside of those legally prescribed channels. The country has seen the harm that can be done through vigilantism and the need for the law to be upheld. Ty Garbin’s guilty plea and admission are a testimony that the process works and deters those who may consider unlawful actions to achieve their goals.
