This Could Also Be Right Up Your Alley:
Michigan’s disaster-stricken Upper Peninsula region, hit by spring flooding, has become the latest to seek large-scale federal assistance. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request for disaster declaration echoes a common plea for federal aid from areas struggling to recover from natural disasters. But who benefits most from such assistance, and at what cost? The answer to this question is far from straightforward and indicates the pros and cons of seeking help from the federal government.
On the one hand, disaster declarations are vital for impacted states and regions to access much-needed federal relief. FEMA’s assessment of damage and allocation of funds have critically aided regions affected by hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The Upper Peninsula’s road and bridge repairs, agricultural losses, and property damage require immediate federal support, which can help ease the burden on taxpayers.
Yet, the allocation of funds always comes with strings attached. As taxpayers, we must recognize that every dollar of federal aid funded by taxes is money not used for other valuable national initiatives. The government must choose the most deserving projects and causes carefully, and some argue that disaster relief funding is often too lenient. The resulting system creates perverse incentives, as states may feel less responsibility to take appropriate preventative measures and instead rely upon federal aid when disaster inevitably strikes.
Resolution, the benefits of federal aid to regions hit by natural disasters are undeniable. The Upper Peninsula’s recent request for aid is both reasonable and necessary. However, we must be aware that these requests come with a potential cost and should be made only when genuinely necessary. Moreover, states and regions should take appropriate steps to reinforce their infrastructure’s vulnerability and mitigate future risks.
