AOC and Progressive Lawmakers Boycott Indian PM’s Congressional Address Over Human Rights Concerns

The decision by some progressive lawmakers to boycott Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to Congress highlights the ongoing debate surrounding India’s human rights record. Firstly, those boycotting claim that Modi’s government’s actions in Kashmir and the Citizenship Amendment Act are discriminatory towards Muslims and violate basic human rights. Others, however, argue that India has denied these allegations and that Modi has received support from members of Congress from both parties.

Those supporting the boycott argue that it is important to hold foreign leaders accountable for their actions, especially when those actions may be in violation of basic human rights. They believe that boycotting Modi’s address sends a clear message that lawmakers are not willing to turn a blind eye to human rights abuses.

Notwithstanding, those who support Modi argue that he has been unfairly targeted and that India has made significant progress in addressing human rights concerns. They argue that while there may be concerns about the government’s actions in Kashmir and regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act, these issues should be addressed through diplomatic channels rather than through a boycott.

In the end, whether or not to boycott Modi’s address is a deeply personal decision that each lawmaker must make for themselves. It is clear, however, that the human rights concerns raised by some lawmakers are not going away anytime soon. As such, it is important for both sides to engage in constructive dialogue to find a way forward that ensures that human rights are respected in India and around the world.
