America’s Aid to Ukraine Should We Stay or Should We Go

The recent survey by Monmouth University shows that a majority of Americans (63%) are against continued aid to Ukraine due to their belief that the U.S. should not be involved in the affairs of other countries. While this viewpoint is understandable given America’s history of interventionism, it is crucial to consider Ukraine’s strategic importance to the U.S. geopolitical interests. Ukraine acts as a buffer to the west against Russia’s expansionist ambitions, and a strong Ukraine stands as a symbol of resistance to authoritarianism.

Those who oppose aid to Ukraine often argue that the country is replete with corruption and is not a wise investment of U.S. resources. While it is true that Ukraine has struggled with corruption in the past, it is important to note that progress is being made. The country has made strides in reforms and anti-corruption measures, and it would be unwise to abandon this progress. The cost of aid to Ukraine is minimal when compared to the overall U.S. budget, and investing an adequate amount in the country would pay off in the long run.

In a different vein, those who do not support aid to Ukraine may point to its limited strategic value to the U.S. In their opinion, the U.S. should focus its resources on helping its allies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. While this is a valid viewpoint, Ukraine’s significance cannot be underestimated. Ukraine is a major gas transit country, and any major disruption in its energy sector would have catastrophic effects on the region.

Bottom line, while the majority of Americans may not support continued aid to Ukraine, it is important to consider the strategic significance of the country’s stability to U.S. interests. A corrupt Ukraine would risk spilling over into other areas of Europe and embolden Russia to further its expansionist goals. America must continue to support anti-corruption measures and offer aid to help strengthen Ukraine’s institutions and economic system. Investing in Ukraine is investing in the stability of an important region of the world, and the U.S. cannot afford to abandon that investment.
